Josh Gad Shares Regret Over Gay LeFou in ‘Beauty and the Beast’: ‘We Didn’t Go Far Enough’
Josh Gad recently told The Independent that he has some regrets over how Disney‘s 2017 live operation “Beauty and the Beast” remake handled making his personality a gay man.
Gad starred in the film as LeFou, the long-suffering sidekick to Gaston (played by Luke Evans in the film). The movie’s director, Bill Condon, announced in USA Today ahead of the film’s release that his “Beauty and the Beast” would introduce Disney’s first openly gay nature. Condon said Gad’s LeFou had “an exclusively gay moment” in the feature, but all that turned out to be was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of LeFou dancing with a man.
“We didn’t go far enough to warrant accolades,” Gad said nearly five years after the film’s free. “We didn’t depart far enough to say, ‘Look how brave we are.’ My regret in what happened is that it became ‘Disney’s first explicitly gay moment’ and it was never intended to be that. It was never intended to be a m

So that was it, huh?
That's what many moviegoers are saying after seeing Disney's latest live-action remake, Beauty and the Beast. They're not talking about the overall production, which is getting great reviews (three out of four stars from USA TODAY) and breaking box office records with a $170 million debut, the highest ever for March and the seventh-highest of all time.
The underwhelmed reaction has been to the so-called "exclusively gay moment" in the film, which has caused international controversy since director Bill Condon first mentioned it in an interview with Attitude magazine.
In the interview, Condon said the character LeFou (Josh Gad) would be portrayed as gay. This caused the film to get shelved in Kuwait and Malaysia, to be given a stricter rating in Russian theaters and to be boycotted by one Alabama drive-in.

In 2017, live-action Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon and actor Josh Gad praised Gad’s portrayal of LeFou — Gaston’s trusty sidekick — as Disney’s first openly gay character. When the movie came out, however, LeFou being "openly gay" simply meant that there was a brief shot of him dancing with a man in one of the feature’s final scenes.
This weekend, Gad known that LeFou’s depiction on-screen wasn’t enough to earn them credit for describing Disney’s first openly gay character.
“We didn’t go far enough to warrant accolades,” Gad said to The Independent (via Variety). “We didn’t go far enough to say, ‘Look how brave we are.’ My lament in what happened is that it became ‘Disney’s first explicitly gay moment’ and it was never intended to be that. It was never intended to be a moment that we should laud ourselves for, because frankly, I don’t consider we did justice to what a real gay personality in a Disney film should be.”
The moment is one that Gad now looks back to with regret. “That was not LeFou,” he added. “If we’re going to pat ourselves on the back, then damn it we should have gone further with that. Everybody deserves an opportunity to observe th
Gay character in "Beauty and The Beast"
Well, I actually am refunding our 6 tickets. Why? Because it's like the last nail in the coffin. I'm already not big on remakes (I did not watch any of the 2016 Disney ones, Jungle Book or BFG - I only did Zootopia and Moana), and I was already worried this movie could not reside up to either its animated or stage glory (I've seen this in London on stage with amazing singers and involved live-action actors, and the previews aren't quite living up to the stage version - they are good, but not as great as that was). While I don't intellect making the LeFou personality gay, giving him a "gay payoff" seems prefer a movie change that makes no sense. Now, I could be improper , but I assume the payoff will come with Gaston. But, Gaston never, ever, ever seemed enjoy anything but a dude fixated on Belle, so for LeFou to possess a chance at Gaston is too much a change of the authentic story (and one which I think actually takes away from the story) for no good reason except to "say we did." Maybe it will end up making more sense and the show will be better than I'm thinking...but since I have 6 openi
