A Look at Colorado Springs’s History
Before its official founding, the area that is now Colorado Springs was once a pivotal part of the American Frontier. Old Colorado City, which was built in 1858 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, was the first official settlement in the region. Shortly thereafter, in 1869, General William Jackson Palmer, a Civil War hero initially from Pennsylvania, made his first visit to the area. When he did so, he fell in love with the area, and a year later, founded the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad there, and purchased the land to create Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs is the state’s second-largest city, but it’s first in the hearts of many visitors as a place of spectacular beauty with dozens of family attractions, natural landmarks and unique museums.
Although many towns and cities in Colorado were settled by miners and ranchers, Colorado Springs’ appeal was climate and culture.
Known as Petite London in its early days, the city was founded by Gen. William J. Palmer in 1871. A Civil War hero and railroad magnate, Palmer influenced much of the state’s settlement, but Colorado Springs was his residence. It had plenty of “civilized” attractions — opera houses, fine hotels and restaurants.
