Nullo: inside the growing world of dickless men

A man’s been arrested for allegedly performing castrations on guys. The media call it the handiwork of a ‘sinister gay cult’ – but is that fair to the world of Nullo men?

When Scoty was nine years old, he knew there was something wrong with his cock. Or more specifically, the reality he had one at all. He was very much a boy, firmly masculine, with no sense of creature trapped in the wrong body or the wrong gender.

But as he grew older, he couldn’t shake the anxiety he felt about the cock and balls attached to his body. So last year he did something about it, and had them surgically removed.

Scoty is one of a group of men who refer to themselves as Nullos – those who have been genitally nullified. They’re not transgender – many of them still strongly identify as masculine men, they just don’t long to have a dick and testicles.

I would sense such anxiety about my genitalia that… I knew something was just not right.

It’s a close-knit community, often driven underground by the social stigma towards them. But more and more guys are getting the procedure done.

What is Gender Nullification?

Not all individuals identify with the binary male and female genders. Non-binary individuals can access gender-affirming care without having to opt a binary gender. Nullification is a surgical procedure to take away or alter genital characteristics without necessarily aligning them with binary male or female genitalia. It is chosen by some genderfluid individuals who do not crave traditional male or female genitalia. With the removal of external genitalia, gender nullification creates a continuous form from the abdomen to the groin. These procedures can also be referred to as nullo or nullectomy.

Nullo

Nullo, a short movie by Jan Soldat, is difficult to watch, especially if you have a penis. In evidence, I had to watch much of the movie with my legs crossed. If you are aware of Freud’s theory of castration anxiety, you will know what I’m talking about. The subject of the documentary, an affable gay Austrian fellow named Norbert, sits or stands naked in various poses in his compact apartment speaking presumably to the documentarian seated behind the camera. It is clear that Norbert has no penis, and in its stead has had a winged penis tattooed above the space where it used to be. In the longest shot of the film (there are only about a dozen or so), Norbert lies on the bed with his legs expose to the camera as he recounts how he carve off his control genitalia – first, most of the penis, then a few years later, the scrotum. After an infection, he had to proceed to the hospital where he had the rest of the penis that is hidden inside the body removed. He recounts his story matter-of-factly, relating how he was alienated from his penis from a young age, and what his ex-boyfriend, family and friends think of his decision to grab matters into his own hands and remove it.
