Exclusive: Rian Johnson on Benoit Blanc’s Sexuality in Knives Out 3: “I’m Sure It’ll Come Into Play”

Knives Out director Rian Johnson recently revealed that Benoit Blanc, the master detective played by Daniel Craig, is gay. Blanc’s sexuality hasn’t really arrive into play that much in the first two films, beyond, perhaps, his fabulous fashion feeling, but that doesn’t mean it won’t play a larger role in the planned third film.

Above the Line‘s Andrew Korpan caught up with Johnson on the Glass Onion red carpet at the Philadelphia Production Festival and asked the director why he felt it was necessary to address Blanc’s sexual identity and whether we’ll learn more about that side of the traits in future Knives Out mysteries.

The reality is that Johnson was simply responding to a ask and didn’t arrange to make a big deal about it, thinking it would be noticeable to those who pay close attention to the upcoming sequel, which co-stars Janelle Monáe, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, and Leslie Odom Jr.

  • Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for Rian Johnson's "Glass Onion."
  • The opening of the film gives audiences a observe at Benoit Blanc's private life during the pandemic.
  • The quick scene also teases that the known detective is queer.

Three years after Rian Johnson surprised audiences with his razor-sharp whodunit, "Knives Out," the director has brought Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc help for the sequel, "Glass Onion." The detective is thrust into a brand-new mystery after entity invited to a lavish Greek island owned by tech millionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton).

The suspects are made up of another star-studded cast with the likes of Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, and Jessica Henwick joining Craig's Benoit on the isla

Benoit Blanc is gay. A fact that’s hard to really ignore when you’ve got both the director Rian Johnson, Blanc’s performer Daniel Craig, and Hugh Grant (who plays Benoit Blanc’s husband, Phillip) all saying so.

For the most part, loud, secular fan-communities that are keen to follow the Knives Out films – aka Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) are more than happy to grip up Craig’s delightful, drawling detective as a lgbtq+ icon. More importantly, they want to see more of Benoit Blanc’s adventures, especially if future sequels include his doting, baker husband.

To put it bluntly: I find myself getting swept away in the possibility of what the future could hold for a gay murder-mystery detective like Benoit Blanc as well. The TikToks, the rambling meta analysis Tumblr posts, the fan-fiction, the fancams, and the thought of a potential crossover with The Muppets (which isn’t happening, by the way) … It feels good to see a movie with a queer protagonist be so loved.

But what intrigued me the most as a queer viewer of Glass Onion is how the film conveyed Blanc’s sexuality without being over

‘Knives Out’ director confirms Daniel Craig’s character is gay

Knives Out director Rian Johnson has confirmed that Daniel Craig’s suave sleuth Benoit Blanc is gay.

Johnson made the announcement while discussing his sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, ahead of last night’s  London Film Festival closing gala.

The director was asked if a scene showing Blanc cohabiting with another man meant that the detective was gay. ‘Yes, he obviously is,’ replied the Celebrity Wars: The Last Jedi director.

Discussing the actor who makes a top-secret cameo as Blanc’s boyfriend, Johnson added: ‘There’s nobody in the world I can conceive bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with.’

Craig added: ‘No spoilers, but who wouldn’t want to live with that person?’

Fans of kitsch murder-mysteries can find out the self of Blanc’s partner when Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery arrives in cinemas on 23 November. It lands on Netflix on 23 December.

Alongside Craig, the all-star cast of the sequel features Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hann, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr and cameo appearances from the la
